The churches were, for many centuries, the goal of the majority of Rome visitors. The faithful from all over Europe made the long and arduous journey to Rome to worship at seven particular sites that were designated as pilgrimage churches. These included the four patriarchal basilicas (San Giovanni in Laterano, San Pietro in Vaticano, San Paolo Fuori le Mura, and Santa Maria Maggiore), as well as three others as its mentioned in Rome churches map: Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura, and San Sebastiano.
Italy is home to some of the most striking and unique churches worldwide, and Rome, as centre of the Holy See, is replete with stunning temples which are definitely worth visiting (see Rome churches map). In Rome are located the four highest-ranking Catholic churches in the world, called the major basilicas in the world. All of them have a high altar, where only the Pope can celebrate mass.
