In 2007, Rome was the 11th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union (see Rome map europe), and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. The city of Rome is one of Europe and the world most successful city "brands", both in terms of reputation and assets, due to its location in the Italian pininsula.
 
As a consequence of the increase of the local practitioners of the Islamic faith, the comune promoted the building of the largest mosque in Europe, which was designed by architect Paolo Portoghesi and inaugurated on 21 June 1995 (see Rome map europe). Rome became one of Europe major centres of Renaissance artwork, second only to Florence, and able to compare to other major cities and cultural centres, such as Paris and Venice.
 
Rome has a large number of universities and colleges. Rome first university, La Sapienza (founded in 1303), is the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world (see Rome map europe), with more than 140,000 students attending; in 2005 it ranked as Europe 33rd best university and currently ranks amongst Europe 50 and the world 150 best colleges.
