Ancient Rome was a thriving civilization that began growing on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 8th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea and centered on the city of Rome as its mentioned in ancient Rome map, it expanded to become one of the largest empires in the ancient world. In its approximately twelve centuries of existence, Roman civilization shifted from a monarchy to an aristocratic republic to an increasingly autocratic empire.

Ancient Rome grew from a small town on central Italy Tiber River into an empire that at its peak encompassed most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands as its shown in ancient Rome map. Among the many legacies of Roman dominance are the widespread use of the Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian) derived from Latin, the modern Western alphabet and calendar and the emergence of Christianity as a major world religion.

Ancient Rome, the state centred on the city of Rome. This ancient Rome map mention the period from the founding of the city and the regal period, which began in 753 BC, through the events leading to the founding of the republic in 509 BC, the establishment of the empire in 27 BC, and the final eclipse of the Empire of the West in the 5th century AD.

According to legend, Ancient Rome was founded by the two brothers, and demigods, Romulus and Remus, on 21 April 753 BCE (see ancient Rome map). The legend claims that in an argument over who would rule ancient Rome (or, in another version, where the city would be located) Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself. This story of the founding of ancient Rome is the best known but it is not the only one.
